UbiWell workshop will bring together researchers with different backgrounds that relate to human-computer-interaction research in ubiquitous wellness and healthcare. The workshop will provide a venue to present novel research in this field and to openly discuss ideas and problems on the topic. Research on wellness and healthcare employing mobile and ubiquitous computing has emerged during recent years, and new application concepts, technical solutions and services have been suggested and demonstrated. The research has been targeted in applications both hospital and home domain, and has extended to creating new systems not only for purposes of medical care or senior citizen but also to for people monitoring their physical activity for weight management or active sports. The technical progress in mobile and wearable computing and in the supporting infrastructure, e.g. with data transfer and device interoperability, have eased the embedded and wireless applications in the area. When ubiquitous wellness and healthcare systems are developed, severe amount of attention has to be paid for the interaction and user interface (UI) design. Intuitive and usable way of interacting with applications is an essential requirement for applications targeting to large audiences or commercial usage, and they often define the success of new concepts. Understanding the user needs and special requirements needs to be taken into account in early concepting and design phase in order to gain efficient and easy-of-use interaction design. HCI research with its various aspects can offer valuable insight to the development of future wellness and healthcare applications that take advantage of ubiquitous computing.
